Hello, I just got an older Dell PowerEdge R510.
It currently has very old versions on it.
I have been able to update BIOS to 1.14.0 through dos.
I am now trying to update the rest using your smart bootable ISO with no luck.
I have first tried using BalenaEtcher ( I have a Mac laptop )to flash my drive with the R510.iso file but am getting a warning saying it’s missing a partition table, I’ve ignored it and went forward.
Once starting up the server and pressing F11 to access the BIOS Boot Manager, then pressing F1 and finally selecting my usb drive, the booting starts but I get two messages:

PXE-E53: No boot filename received
PXE-M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM

I am then taken to my ubuntu server.

I then tried using dd in the command line on my laptop to flash the usb drive this way:

sudo dd if=/Users/mazzanfar/Downloads/R510.iso of=/dev/rdisk24 bs=1m status=progress

2192572416 bytes (2193 MB, 2091 MiB) transferred 31.045s, 71 MB/s

2108+1 records in

2108+1 records out

2210414592 bytes transferred in 31.382315 secs (70435039 bytes/sec)

sudo diskutil eject /dev/disk24

Disk /dev/disk24 ejected

I had the same issue.

Any idea on what I am doing wrong?

Thanks a lot, much appreciated!

Hey there. First that output looks like a PXE boot output which probably isn’t the BIOS boot menu. Just make sure you know you’re in the right system and hitting the right button. Worst case don’t use the boot menu button and use the button that gets you into the main BIOS and set the first boot device to be USB or whatever option works other that the main hard drives. Until you can verify it’s trying to boot the USB you don’t know if etcher worked. An alternative that might work is Ventoy. Very useful to have on a USB drive as it lets you swap out the ISO files and gives you a menu of which one you want to boot. If none of that works, try etcher again but try using an older USB 2.0 drive.

That’s about all the advice I can give as I don’t even run my Dells anymore. They are offline backups in case of hardware failure. Well the R710s are. The R210 ii is still running pfsense just fine.

Dear Allen,

Thank you for your reply, I also tried using ventoy with no luck, I was taken to dracut for some reason.
I have finally been able to update my server via ubuntu executing the .BIN files available on dell.com.

I copied them from my laptop via ssh into my server at a /tmp directory.
I started by updating idrac6 using:

then life cycle controller:

Here’s an example for idrac6, works the same way for lifecycle controller:

# Enable 32-bit architecture
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update

# Install the missing runtime pieces
#  (libstdc++.so.5 comes from "libstdc++5" in Ubuntu's archive)
sudo apt install -y libc6:i386 libgcc-s1:i386 zlib1g:i386 libxml2:i386 libstdc++5:i386

# run the update package
cd /tmp
sudo chmod +x ESM_Firmware_KPCCC_LN32_2.92_A00.BIN
sudo ./ESM_Firmware_KPCCC_LN32_2.92_A00.BIN

I was then able to use the server’s lifecycle controller to update other firmware using Kenneth Finnegan’s FTP server: https://updateyodell.net

Thank you again for the help.

Cheers!
